From Gooseberries to Bloom: The Making of Our Fermented Berry Collection

It all began last summer, when my lovely neighbor Dana found herself completely overrun with gooseberries.

If you’ve ever grown them, you know: gooseberries are prolific. Hardy. Unbothered. Thriving in Detroit soil with very little fuss. They’re intensely tart—almost shocking on the tongue—but when juiced, they become something special. Bright. Alive. Deeply nourishing.

Gooseberries are also known as amla, a revered berry in traditional herbal systems, celebrated for its exceptional antioxidant content and skin-supportive properties. Rich in vitamin C, polyphenols, and protective plant compounds, they’re as functional as they are humble.

That was the spark.

Last Year Was Berry Season

Once the gooseberries arrived, everything opened up.

It was one of those summers where nature simply gave and gave. Mulberries stained the sidewalks. Wild blackberries climbed fences. Raspberries—black, red, even white—appeared in quiet pockets. Grapes ripened on the vine, their leaves just as valuable as the fruit itself.

I harvested it all.

Carefully. Intentionally. With the awareness that this wasn’t just abundance—it was an invitation.

At a certain point, surrounded by baskets of fruit, I realized:
This isn’t just for eating. This is for skincare.

And so the collection began.

A Wild-Harvested Berry Blend

This blend is exactly what it sounds like: a wild-harvested collection of gooseberries, blackberries, mulberries, wild grapes, and grapevines—collected at peak ripeness, cleaned meticulously, and then transformed.

Rather than juicing or extracting them raw, I chose a slower, more intentional process.

The berries were gently fermented in distilled water and raw honey, allowing time to do what time does best—soften, break down, and unlock what’s held inside the plant. After fermentation, the solution was carefully preserved, honoring both safety and integrity.

What remained was a giant vat of deep purple liquid—rich in color, layered in aroma, slightly tart, softly sweet, and unmistakably alive.

It’s been sitting patiently in my studio ever since, waiting for the right moment.

That moment is now.

Fermentation as Relationship

Fermentation is a time-honored tradition—one that asks us to treat ingredients not as raw materials, but as living participants in the process.

When something is fermented, it is alive. And because it is alive, it deserves respect.

Throughout this process, the berries were tended with care. No rushing. No forcing. No arguing with the process. Only clean hands, thoughtful attention, and a calm, steady environment. Words spoken with intention. Energy kept light. A genuine sense of collaboration with what was unfolding naturally.

This may sound subtle, but it matters.

Plants respond to how they are handled. Fermentation responds to its surroundings. Loving intention, patience, and respect are not extras here—they are part of the formulation itself.

Why Ferment Berries for Skincare?

Fermentation isn’t just tradition—it’s chemistry, biology, and wisdom working together.

Through fermentation, berries undergo a transformation that makes their beneficial compounds more accessible, more compatible with skin, and more gentle than raw fruit preparations.

Here’s what this process creates:

The Benefits of Our Fermented Berry Blend

Antioxidant-Rich Plant Metabolites

This blend is naturally high in polyphenols, anthocyanins, and protective plant compounds derived from deeply pigmented berries. These antioxidants help support skin exposed to environmental stress and daily oxidative pressure—without relying on harsh or isolated actives.

Improved Bioavailability

Fermentation breaks down larger plant compounds into smaller, more usable forms, allowing the nutrients within the berries to integrate more gently and effectively with the skin.

Naturally Supportive pH

The fermentation process produces mild organic acids that help bring the solution into a skin-friendly acidic range, supporting the skin’s natural barrier and overall balance.

Microbiome-Friendly Postbiotic Compounds

Even after preservation, fermented ingredients retain beneficial postbiotic byproducts—metabolites created during fermentation that support harmony rather than disruption.

Gentle, Non-Stripping Support

Fermentation softens tannins and reduces irritation potential, creating an ingredient that supports the skin without overwhelming it.

Hydration-Supportive Synergy

While not a humectant on its own, this fermented solution works beautifully alongside glycerin, aloe, and botanical waters—supporting the skin’s ability to hold moisture and remain supple.

Nothing Wasted: Honoring the Whole Plant

After the fermentation process was complete and the liquid was preserved, I was left with the berries themselves—softened, deeply pigmented, and still full of story.

Rather than discarding them, I slowed the process down even further.

The post-fermented berries were gently strained, then slowly dehydrated over two days, allowing their remaining moisture to leave without scorching their color or character. Once fully dried, they were carefully ground into a richly hued botanical material.

That final transformation became a macerated berry soap—textural, grounding, and earthy—made from what remained.

Whole plant. Fully used. Nothing wasted.

A Collection Rooted in Respect

This entire process—from harvesting to fermentation to soapmaking—is a reflection of how I believe skincare should be created: slowly, intentionally, and in conversation with nature.

Whole plants used fully.
Local abundance honored.
Formulas born from season and place.

This fermented berry collection is not just about antioxidants or barrier support—it’s about remembering that the most powerful formulations are often the ones that mirror how nature works: cyclical, efficient, and generous.

And this is only the beginning.
